Physical evidence of tattooing in ancient Egypt exists but mention in the written record is rare. The authors explore ancient figurines and mummfied human remains with examples of tattoos. They also discuss theories of Nubian influence on the practice and the shift from geometric patterns to the motif of the Bes figure, as well as issues of pigments and instruments.
