Akhenaten: monotheist? polytheist?
While it is beyond doubt that at Amarna Akhnaton worshipped only the sungod, which suggests monotheism, there is also evidence that representations of Amun were replaced by those of the king's deified father Amenhotep III or Ptah and that figures of Osiris next to Amun were left untouched. This and various other evidence suggests that Akhnaton is rather a polytheist with a fancy for a particular god, i.e. Aton as the sungod, for whom he created Amarna as the place of exclusive worship. Outside Amarna, worship of the other gods continued, except for Nekhbet and those gods associated with Amun. These deities seemed to endanger the supreme roles of the female cobra goddess Wadjet and the sungod. This might have been a model for his own royal power, which he shared to some extent with Nefertiti. (OEB)
