Since 2008, the IFAO in collaboration with Macquarie University has been carrying out a systematic survey of the Wadi Araba in the Eastern Desert. During this exploration 300 archaeological sites have been recorded so far: Paleolithic settlements, a Neolithic/Predynastic site, Old and Middle Kingdom miners' camps, a Byzantine or Roman cemetery, Christian (Coptic) hermitages, modern Bedouin structures, resting places and cairns. The article focusses on one such hermitage.
