In contrast to common opinion that the name Georgios (English George) is genuinely, though not classical Greek, the author proposes to trace back the name to a late epithet of Horus, namely grg "hunter". The author considers it significant that the earliest historically corroborated bearer of the name Georgios was a native of Alexandria, who had become Bishop of Laodikaia in AD 335. (OEB)
