Short overview of the socio-economic implications of pottery production in Lower Egypt, particularly at Buto, in the Pre- and Early Dynastic Periods and the OK, on the basis of archaeological methods, Egyptian art, textual evidence, ecology, and ethnological analogies. This approach can assist in understanding the scale and mode of pottery production - the craft best known in the archaeological record -, the labour and resource investments and the organisation of work.
