The article presents an overview of the cemeteries in the region of the ancient capital of Akhmim and focusses on the late Old Kingdom rock-cut tombs in the cliffs west of the White Monastery near Sohag. These tombs predate the use of the mountain as a limestone quarry. In one of the tombs, in the sloping passage, five rectangular wooden coffins were found, now in the Sheikh Hammad Magazine at Athribis.
