Tourism plays a crucial role in the social, cultural and economic development of the nations. This multidimensional contribution of tourism makes it also vulnerable to multidimensional challenges ranging from environmental issues, decision-making complexities, and geopolitical conundrums. Therefore, this thesis evaluates the growth of tourism development in connection with sustainable tourism development.

The thesis starts by evaluating the impact of tourism development on the environment and analyses the relationship between capital investment in travel and tourism and renewable energy. Using the latest panel econometric techniques on annual data from 2004 to 2018 for 26 European Union member countries, this thesis employs a panel fixed effects and a two-step system generalised method of moments estimation method to generate the results. Findings indicate a positive and significant impact of tourism investment on a country’s total renewable energy consumption. This relationship is positive and significant in the accommodation subsector but insignificant in the transportation subsector. The limited influence of tourism investment in transportation may stem from its novelty and the limited integration in the sector. This study's results are robust to different measures of tourism and estimation techniques, including the Mundlak, that further validate the original results. This study presents the first empirical investigation to demonstrate the positive impact of tourism investment on achieving sustainable tourism development through the transition to fully decarbonised energy.

Similarly, this thesis considers the tourists as one of the main stakeholders in the tourism industry, and like the consumers, the tourists' decision-making regarding the purchase of tourism products has long-lasting consequences for the overall tourism industry. Therefore, this study evaluates the financial decision-making of consumers under uncertain and time-pressure situations and the role of reflective prompts in reducing risky decision-making through the randomized control trial experiment in the economic labs. This study found that consumers under time pressure and novelty-seeking behaviour tend to make risky financial decisions, which might be a source of regret and dissatisfaction with their decision at a later stage. However, this risky behaviour can be altered with the help of reflective prompts that let them reflect on their decisions by inducing System II thinking. The findings of this study can be equally applicable in the tourism context. Therefore, this study helps policymakers devise the policies that lead to sustainable tourism decision making, especially in the financial decisions domains.

Finally, this thesis evaluates the impact of external shocks on tourism development. For instance, Tourism receipts are a barometer of tourism performance and destination development; therefore, they measure the overall performance of the demand for tourism. The variations in tourism receipts due to shocks and uncertainties, give a signal about the health of the tourism sector and so motivate towards enacting and devising concrete policies to overcome any negative impacts. Therefore, this study examines the impact of geopolitical risks (a comprehensive measure of the risks index) on tourism receipts for the G20 economies, which are further divided into subsamples of developed and developing countries. This study used the new and updated GPR index measured by Caldara and Iacoviello (2022) and the longest annual data available on tourism receipts from 1995 to 2018. It was found that the increase in geopolitical uncertainty raises the alarm for tourists and so reduces tourism receipts. These results are derived using sophisticated panel econometric techniques, including fixed effects for the panel and a two-step system GMM. Additionally, the study establishes a causal relationship between geopolitical turmoil and tourism receipts by employing a physical instrument of Regional GPR and reanalyses the data through two-stage least squares regression as an additional robustness analysis. The findings provide valuable guidance for policymakers and tourism operators, emphasising the need to consider the immediate impacts of global risks, particularly geopolitical tensions, when formulating long-term tourism development strategies.
