What can you do for the reader?: the literary effects of the second person narrative voice

This PhD thesis seeks to isolate and exploit the unique literary effects that can beachieved with the sustained second person narrative voice in fiction. Secondperson, particularly in its sustained form, is a fascinating but rarely used modeamong novelists, and has been given comparatively little attention by theacademy. The project involved a thorough review of current research, a reading ofevery sustained second person novel that could be identified, and a testing of whatwas learned by experimentation, ie, by the writing of original second personfiction.
